It was formally named by the Regional Stratigraphic Chart Editorial Group of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (RSCEGXUAR) (1981).
Synonym: Gao et al. (2014a) treated the Pakabulake Fm named by the RSCEGXUAR (1981) as a synonym of the Kangcun Fm.

The Kangcun Fm is divided into two members. Lower member consists of dark brown sandy mudstones interbedded with greyish-green mudstones and siltstones. Upper member is characterized by dark tan sandy mudstones with a small amount of sandstones. It contains fossil charophytes, conchostracs, ostracods, and gastropods, which are deposited in the lacustrine deposits. Its thickness is in range of 750~1256 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Kangcun Fm conformably contacts with the underlying Oligocene-Miocene Jidike Fm.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Kangcun Fm is conformably overlain by the Pliocene Kuche Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is widely distributed to the region in-between the north slope of the Jidike Mt. and the south slope the Tienshan Mts. In Korla area, the formation is unexposed on the surface but can be seen in the rock cores of boreholes.
